I was surprised today- despite getting up at noon, there were still tonnes of LPs around Harajuku. None of the big name lolita brands had sold out, so I'm glad I didn't take my friend's advice and get there at 6am! My suitcases are pretty stuffed and I was running low on funds, so I just got LPs from Swimmer and Paris Kid's. However, I am currently at the stage where I have filled 2 suitcases and an overnight bag, so it will be a challenge to bring it all back. I'm actually calculating how many layers of clothing I can wear at once and how much stuff I can cram in my pockets for the plane ride. Remember that episode of The Simpsons where they go to the candy festival and Homer steals the Gummy de Milo? Think of me as the over-stuffed Marge whose pockets are about to burst with burando accessories X_x

Last night was fun, some peeps from my hotel and I walked around to the local shrines for the first pilgrimage of the new year at midnight. It was cold, so the people at the shrine had lots of hot sake ready for us. At the Inari shrine we hit up, the sake was a little stronger than I'm accustomed to and my high-pitched coughing echoed throughout the holy site, eliciting an endearing "kawaii" from the Shinto priest.

Tomorrow I hop on a plane to Brisbane. I'm none too thrilled about it. I was discussing with one of my ex-pat friends who lives in Tokyo now about how the lack of variety, new things and fun stuff to do after 5pm other than drink in Brisbane really sucks the soul out of you. She used to love the place because it was her hometown, but like so many, she was able to reflect on how truly stifling it is there after she got out. I want to get out again too. I really do. Maybe that should be my belated New Year's Resolution.

I is here and HOLY SHIT NOSTALGIA. I haven't heard those happy little train station jingles since the X-Japan concert in '08. (Every train station has its own jingle it plays when the train is about to depart instead of the grating "Doors closing, please stand clear.)

I'll have some pics up soon but yesterday I caught up with a friend who's staying over here and we managed to do both Harajuku and Shinjuku in one day. The latter was full of host boys! They had the most lovely hair and faces, but I must be getting old because they were all too young for me.

It's positively freezing so hot cans of tea from vending machines have been on the menu. I also had an epic riceball that was tomoato sauce rice wrapped in egg. My friend and I hit up an Izakaya in Shinjuku and did the "all you can drink" thing. The bastards served the booze in big glasses that were practically steins so I only got down 5 and a half drinks before our time was up. That was my limit anyway, seeing as I had been mixing sake and umeshu. Vomiting and passing out in a foreign city isn't something I'd like to repeat. (AVCon 2006 afterparty, anyone?)

So today I'm wandering over to Shibuya and then hopefully onto Akihabara for PantyQuest2011. Wish me luck.

JAPON

I didn't expect to get this in the mail today.

I'm not entirely sure why they'd send out a postcard that from seems to be about an expired sale all the way to Australia, but it was very cool to recieve :D *affixes it to her wall proudly* The little Shibuya postmark (lol Japon) makes me want to go back there so much. My patience is wearing thin >_>

Speaking of a complete lack of patience, I'm positivley itching to get some work experience under my belt in the Journalism department. I want to speak with the course coordinator about it but I should really wait for my credit to transfer over until I start organising any meetings. God I need a reference, even if it's just from a shitty Uni newsletter or something ._.

Oh wow, there's actually a title for this shit. I wish I'd known about that when the whole anti-war movement was it its peak, I could've called out so many tree-hugging hippies.

A little bit of bad news- due to having to shimmy around my Journalism subjects, I am no longer able to take Japanese as an elective which means I won't be able to study over there next year as I had been hoping ._. This makes me sad. However, with any luck I'll land a teaching job there in 2011 which means that I'll actually be earning money and thus be able to satisfy some of my shopping needs, unlike if I had chosen to merley study there. (Can you imagine how far $280 per fortnight would go after the conversion rate?) Plan B is now in place- I'm hoping that this time next year I'll be packing my bags to study in the state of New York. What was that I said about spending money? >_>

In regards to money, I *may* need to get a second job. The conversational English thing I signed up for pays well - $23.85 an hour! - but I have a feeling there won't be many hours as many people have signed up for it and each class only goes for 1-2 hours. Ideally I could go some night work, but not something that goes too late (10pm at the latest). And I refuse to stock shelves again. That was one week I don't care to relive. This is going to be fun.

Mmm, tea soothes my soul and makes me happy. I feel like going back to My Sweetopia where I can satisfy both my tea and macaron fetish. I might even head over there on Friday if I can be arsed. (Anyone care to join me? X3)

Let it be noted in the history books that this post was made before Obama was shot.

Dear Japan,

I will kill you and everyone you've ever loved.

Sincerely,
- The person reading up on your railway lines

Seriously, is it that complicated to get from Kansai Airport to Shinsaibashi/Yotsubashi station? Apparently yes. *kicks JR pass in the ass*

I got my passport yesterday, which momentarily took my mind off the horrific prospect of starting Uni. Don't get me wrong, Market Day was lots of fun, but for some reason a faggoty hippy subject like Arts requires more brainpower to organise than something like a Bachelor of Journalism or Science or whatever... at least those degrees pertain to specific fields and thus there are certain subjects you have to do. With Arts there's several dozen courses you can choose to major in and it's a lot more broad... no-one can tell you which courses to do, you just pick some at random and hope that you're doing what's required. ... I think I need to pay a visit to Student Services -_-

The Japan Monologues, part 5, 876:

You know you've picked an awesome place to stay at when the website describes taking public transport to their hotel as " If you'd like a challenge, give it a try."
