Thank you to everyone who took the time to reply to my last post on defying human nature to achieve world peace. It was actually an interesting read and some great food for thought. Much loves <3 It's not a terribly pragmatic field of study but still more useful than Philosophy 101.
Gah, last night was so much fun! Matt and I met up in the city after our respective Uni stuffs and got hammered during happy hour at Fat Louie's. As we downed one spirit after another, we had a leaf through the newspaper (Rupert Murdoch + vodka ftw?) and saw that our beloved Dendy Cinema was opening again under the name Tribal Cinema... and the movies started in an hour!
So we casually walked down to George Street with no intention of doing anything more than sticking our heads in, but as soon as the crowds and free wine came into view I couldn't help but get excited and soon we were snuggled up on a beanbag in Cinema 2 watching student films with a glass of shiraz in hand. (I have no idea if we were supposed to buy tickets, but no-one stopped us :3)
Okay, so this theatre means a lot to me for several reasons: My mother, uncle and auntie all worked there in the 60s and 70s (and I have a photo featuring Mum with her arm around one of the statues in the foyer, champagne in hand, to prove it), but aside from that, the Dendy was the first place I got drunk in public at the age of 17. It was at the Japanime festival back in 2002 where all the anime was R-rated because they couldn't afford to go through the classification board, so I didn't get to see anything aside from Spirited Away. After that was the Cowboy Bebop premiere the following year, and once again I was underageb& getting drunk on free booze. Afterwards I threw up out the window of Dad's car and we were pulled over by a cop who asked to see the fake sword I'd used for the shitty Wufei from Gundam Wing outfit I'd thrown together for the event. I visited the cinema infrequently over the next several years... I think I went once on a shitty date with a Channel 9 camera man who couldn't keep his zoom lense in his pants... but I always remembered the place fondly for its awesome atmosphere and endless supply of cheap wine.
They're trying to turn a profit and tickets are cheap as hell, so for the love of God go see Pan's Labrynth next week <3
