Note that there are frequent radial trains which go from "towns" (they are more like suburbs) to Grand Central in Manhattan. You probably want to avoid driving there. :-)
I have been to NY twice, and stayed in a nice town called Nyack, which is on the Hudson about 45 minutes by train to Manhattan. It is also near the *biggest* mall in US, which was kind of cool.
Good luck, and get used to very cheap alcohol. You might like everclear. :-)
